OAMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of this Committee took place last evening in the office of the Secretary, Mr 3. Church. Present, — Messrs Sumpter (in the chair), N. Fleming, H. Aitken, Falconer, Fairley, Headland, Church (Secretary), the Rector of the Grammar School (Mr Thornton), and the Head Master of the North School (Mr ing)Letters were read from Miss Quinlan and Mr Ismay, resigning their appointments in the North School ; Mist Quinlan stating that she had obtained a good appointment in the Timaru School, and Mr Ismay that he would be unable to resume his duties after June. It was resolved that the resignations be accepted. Also, that the Secretary inform Miss Quinlan that the Committee will endeavor to allow her to leave as soon as a substitute can be obtained. Also, that the Secretary furnish Miss Quinlan with a certificate of the Committee's appreciation of her abilities. It was then ordered that advertisements be inserted in the local papers, and the •' Daily Timeg," on alternate days, and in the " Provincial Gazette," up to the 16th June for an assistant master for the North School at L150 per annum, and for a miltress at L125. The Secretary then read the following Quarterly Report by the Sector of the Grammar School : —

Grammar School, May 22, 1876. The Secretary School Committee, Oamaru. Dear Sir, — For the information of the Committee, I beg to subjoin the following statements of attendauce at the Grammar School during the current quarter: — Number on rolls at the end of March, 430; number on rolls on May 22nd, 467 ; arerage attendance for quarter up to date, 390 ; admissions to date, 49; highest daily attend ance, 411. 2. The following statement shows the strength of the various daises, and the total* at the present time : —

3. A referencs to the returns tent in at th# last quarterly meeting of the Committee will make it clear that the abore statements contain evidence of steady progresi in the matter of numbers. Should a further increaie take place, difficulties will, I fear, arise regarding accommodation. Two of the rooms are already inconveniently full ; io much so, Indeed, in the infant room, that I anticipate it will soon prove necessary to stop admission into it. 4. The school fee collection for the quarter ending March 31st ammounted to L173, and about L6 arrears hay* still to be collected. My estimate for the current quarter amounts to L195, of which, as is shown in the Bubjoined statement, L168 16s 9d has already been collected. You will observe that I haye so arranged the accounts as to show the fee collections in each clats separately, and alto the amounts contributed by boys and girls ! respectively. This plan, though somewhat more troublesome than that hitherto in yogue, will, I believe, prove usefol for reference in the future : —

I remain, Sir, Faithfully yours, J. Thoekton. Mr Headland said the report clearly shewed a necessity for more teaching power in the infant room, there being no less than 144 children to one teacher. Mr Aitken said he thought the want of more teaching power existed throughout the school. After some further discussion it was resolved that the report be adopted. The following report from the Master of the North School was alao read : — North School, Oamaru, May 22nd, 1876. To the Chairman, Oamaru School Committee. Sir, — I beg to lay before you the following report for quarter ending April 7, 1876. .1. The number of pupils in attendance was 218 ; the average attendance being 194 : the boys numbering 111, and the Girls 83. 2. The school fees amounted to L83 16s 2d. 3. The ichool was examined on Thursday and Friday, the 11th and 12th inst., by Mr Taylor, Inspector of Schools. 4. I would draw your attention to the school buildiDg, which has been slightly damaged by the late earthquakes, and which it may be necessary to repair. — I am, &o., D. -FLEMING. It was resolved that the report be received. The matter of the damage to the North School, which was explained by Mr Fleming to be very trifling, wa3 referred to the Building Committee. i Mr Aitken suggested that the Committee should represent to the Government the necessity of having the windows of the old school building oh the hill boarded up, but no action was taken thereon. Amounts to the amount of L19 Os 6d were passed for payment, so soon as the Treasurer is in funds, and the Committee then adjourned.
