A. statement has lately appeared ji^ £h,e London "Spectator",, of every , fortune/ of L?^0,00,p and upwardp, qpnqisting q\, personalty which nas been transferred, Jn England by death during the last ten yeara \x\ 1863 that fjescrjpjjon qf property wiis estimated at 1.3,250,000 ; , in ' 1864, L05O.OOO'; 18(55,' L8,000,000 ; ' 1866, 1.4,050,000 5 1867, L8, 1 60,00,0 ; 1868, L7,85O,60O; I860, LIO.GOO.'OOO;. 1876, L9,950,0OO; 1871, L10,3.10,000 ; 1872, L7,C50,00O; total, L76, 000,000. This amount was left by 158 individuals, and averaged L481,000 each. To tin's amount may be added the value of their, real prpperty, which may safety be estimated at one hundred millions sterling. Amongst
the large landed proprietors are to fee found the names of the late Marquis of Westminster, whose personalty was returned at L800,000 ; the Duke of Cleveland at L8Q0.0Q0 ; ,Duke. of, Northumberland, L500,000; the Duke of Bedford, 1.600,000 ; and the Knrl of Ahergavenny, L300.000, all of whom it is well known possessed very, extensive freehold estates. The millionaires, were ten in number, and their aggregate personal wealth was estimated at L 16,700,000. The largest individual amount was L3,0QO,O00, left by Mr Giles Loder, of London ; the next was L2,800,000, by , Mr Richard - Thornton, merchant, London; Mr Wm. Crawahay, of South Wales, ironmaster, L2,000,000; Ikron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Ll, 800,000} Sir 13. L. Guinness, of Dubliu, Ll, 100,000; Mr S&muel Scott, , of Cavendish.- Square^ London, Ll,400,'000; Mr Thomas Fielden, of Welln>ld, Ll, 300,000 ; Mr feamuej Eyres, of Leeds, Ll.200,000; Mr Hudson Gurney, of Norfolk. L-1,100,000, nnd Mr H. Porman, ironmaster, of South Wales, Ll, 000,000. The preceding facts present substantial evidence of the wealth of the United -Kingdom, and they include not only numbers of the aristocracy, bu^ many of the leading firms of the greal; commercial establishments of Great Britain.
