THE VOLUNTEERS. OAMARU VERSUS TAIERI.

The match between the Oamaru and Tai«i Companies came off on Saturday at the respective ranges. Terms and conditions same as former match, viz. : — 7 rounds ; range*) 200, 400, and 600 yards ; class target*; position, Hythe at 200 ; any at 400 and 500 yards. The Oamaru team mustered on the range at 4 ».m., but, ovriug to the dome -fog which completely obscured the targets, marker's butt, and indeed every object beyond thfl distance of 50 yards, they had to wait two hours before a shot could be fired. After the firing commenced, the masses of vapor rolling up from the sea every now and then almost hid the target, and it was not till the 500 yards was reaohed that a cltar atmosphere was obtained. This told heavily against the scoring, but, notwithstanding, tbe total put together (a fraction over 1088) is very close upon — indeed within 7 points of— that of last match, the Oamaru score in which was 1095. Had the morning been a fine one this would have been topped by at least 30 points. The two hours' delay before firing rendered it impossible to finish the match right out before business hours, and six of the team— being compelled to be at their places of business by 8 o'clock — were allowed to leave after finishing the 400 yards. These, with the exception of one, for whom the average at the 500 yards is put down, were at the firing point again at 5.30 p.m. and fired their remaining 7 rounds. One man (Private Kirk) not putting in an appearance, Major Steward, who superintended the firing, shot on his behalf— making just two points less than the average of the rest of the team* The following are the scores : —

Average 54*8 20. * The average strictly is 1714-19.
