INDIA AND THE EAST.
Scrinuggur, the capital of Cashmere, has been the scene of a destructive conflagration, which burned down nearly 300 housei. The fort of Q-ilghifc also has been destroyed. — The Russians are reported to hare been defeated by the Turcomans in the Balkan district. Tlieir loss is said to be considerable. — Three thousand families are said to have been carried into slavery from Meshed by the Turcomans. ' Supplies had also been cut off from the district and distress was widespread; — Famine rages in Persia. Thousands are said to lie by the wayside unburied ; cases are known of parents eating their own children, and of Mahomedans killing and devouring Pareees. Euiopean residents in the faminestricken districts, dreading the sights that abound, keep within their own houses. So severe is the famine in certain parts, that not only have the dates and sugar of caravans been seized and e.itcn by the starving inhabitants 6f villages through which they passed, ( but the pack-mules were greedily devoured as well. — Again, affairs in Affghanistsn have assumed a serious aspect for the Ameer Sheer Ali. His Bon Yaccob Khan has taken Herat, after defeating the Ameer's army, and is said to be marching on (Jandahar. The fidelity of the Candahar troops is also suspected.
