A NEW PORT.
( To the Editor of the Oamabo Times. ) Sib, — We the undersigned wish to call the atten* tion of all interested in the welfare of the district to a place on the coast about five miles south of Oamaru, opposite Mr Balfour's farm, where nature hag provided every facility for the construction of a dock for vessels of 1000 tons burden. In building walls to form the entrance to the dock from the sea it is necessary to have rock to build upon, and in forming a dock one of the first requirements is a sufficient depth of water. The place indicated possesses both these requirements, while it is at the same time free from the shifting shingle so common on many parts of the coast, and we are confident that a dock could be constructed of four acres capacity for the sum of L40,000, exclusive of the cost of the dock gates, which could be raised by subscription. A railway could be taken along the beach, and in by Mr Honour's farm, the terminus to be in Tynestreet, at foot of Wansbeck-street, for the sum of Ll0,000 — this exclusive of the cost of building stations, &c, which latter could also be raised by subscription. We will undertake to construct a dock four acres in extent at the site indicated, and a railway thereto, exclusive of cost of dock gates and railway buildings, for the sum of L50,000. We are, &c, Robert Wilson. Waiter Hossack. Oamaru, Jan. 30, 1871. [The above was unavoidably held over from our last. Ed. O. T.]
