February 2nd. The nomination for the city election toot place today. Messrs Borlnse, Hunter, Pearce, Richmond, Travers, and Martin were proposed. Tha show of hands was in favor of Richmond and Travers.
Auckland January 30th, via TAUUANGA, February let. A telegram, dated Alexandra, Januai-y 28th, and published in the " Herald," says>: —" Tawhiao has been dethroned, nnd his son made King. Rewi has gone to Taupo with 150 men, to stop the telegraph and the roads." Mr Vogel has been returned for Auckland City East without
opposition. February 2nd. Yesferday two Waikato settlers, while pigeonahootnu, were fired upon near the Pii-ongia Ranges by the Maoiis, three of whom followed them for a couple of hundred yaids outside the bush. Twelve Bhots in all were Gred, but no one was hurt, "Warn - ing lias beeu again received that Tapihana is bent on misrhief on his own account, as Whitiora has declined to join him, the King having refused his sanction to his doing so. For the Eden election Mr Creighton obtained 188 votes to Mr Kerr's 117.
Napier, February 1st. The nomination of candidates for the representation of the East Coast Maori electoral district took place to-day, when Karaitiana Tokomoana was elected. Tareha, the former member, refused to stand.
New Plymouth, January 30th, via Patea, February 1st. Mr Kelly has been elected for New Plymouth by a majority of 67 over his opponent, Mr Whitcorabe.
Blenheim, February 1st. The following is the result of the Cheviot election : —Inglis, 62 5 Ward, 56 ; Gooch, 20.
CuitiSTCnuBCH, February 1st. The Selwyn election resulted as follows :—Reeves, 102 ; Stevens, 101 ; majority for Reeves, 1.
Qtteenstown, February 2nd. The steamer Antrim arrived here at 9 o'clock last night with Mr Macandrew, who was rceived with loud cheers. About 12 o'clock the steamer was discovered to be on fire. The fire was extinguished in about an hour's time without causing much damage.
PKINCE AlVEED DISAPPROVES OP " FOHMOSA." — We take tho following admirable remarks on "Formosa" from the " Australasian ", : — " His Royal Highness has refined to countenance tho performance in the principal theatre of this city of such literary garbage as ' Formosa.' By so doing, he has shown that he is mindful of the responsibilities of his position, and of what is expected from him as the son of a Sovereign one of whose titles to the affectionate loyalty of her subjects is the purity of her couit and the moral elevation of her character."
