January 27th. Mr Swainson lias boen returned for Newton. The imports into Auckland during the year 1870 show an increase of L92.000, and the population of the city an increase during the same period of 716. A contract has been completed to raise the ship City of Auckland for L9i. Flour has receded 20s, and the present quotations are L13 to L15.

Napieb, January 26th. A man named Donaldson made ln's uppeiirance at Messrs Johnston and Westrupp's sheaiii.g shed, Poveity B.iy, stripped to his shirt, and stated that he hiid just escaped from Te Kooti, by whom hU mate, " Fred," had been tomahawked. Major Weslmpp called for volunteers, went out, and ascertained that Donaldson's statement was false. Eopata is well inland after Te Kooti. Mr Ormond, Superintendent of Hawke's BaVi was to-day re elected to represent the district of Clive in the House of Representatives, lie was proposed by Mr Adeane, and seconded by Colonel Lambert. There was a large attendance of electors, who were addressed by Mr Ormond at conei lerablo length. He is a supporter of the present Government.

Nelson January 26th. The nomination for the Nelson Suburbs election took place to day. Mr Fedor Kolling and Mr Ralph Richardson were proposed. The show of hands was in favor of the former. A poll was demanded by Mr Richardson Mr Kellintf supports, and Mr Richardson ODDOses the G-overnment.

January 30th. The nomination for the Motueka election took place to day, when Sir David llouro and Mr Parker were proposed. The show of hunda was in fa?or of the latter. A poll was demanded.

GreymouiH, January 26th. The election for tho Grey dislt it-t took pliice to-day. At Greymouth the figures were —Harrison, 297 ; Buckley", 72. At Cobden they were—Harrison, 55 ; Buckley, 20. The returns from eleven places have to come in.

Hokitika, January 26th. The election for a member to represent Ilokitika in the General Assembly took place to day. The nomination for th* Totu, a election took place to-rlav, when the following gentlemen were proposed: —Mr Michael K>ogh (lute Wardon), Mr F. Carriers, Mr Edmund Barff, Mr Courad IIoos, and Mr F. Tribe.

Qctbcnstown, January 26th. The following is the result of the poll for the Wukatio election : —

Majority for Hamilton, 29. Arrowtown bas swiimpjd the rest of the district. The cry raised there by Mr Haughton's Committee was " Arrow district versus Queenstown district," which was an entirely false issue. A lnive number of miners who would'have Toted were disfranchised, through their miners' rights not having been held for sis consecutive months. Great excitement prbvailed, and at Arrovrtown great exertions were made by Mr Hiuuhton's Committee. They employed a lar^e number of vehicles and horses. Mr Shepherd has notified hi3 intention of having a scrutiny of the An ow town votes, alleging that personation has taken place with miners' rights. The last returns did not reach Queenstown until 1 o'clock this morning. Another correspondent 6ays : — At the declaration of the poll Mr Haughton simply thanked the electors, but Mr Shepherd made a long speech. He aitributed his loss of the election to the unpopularity of his chief supporter, Mr H.tlienstein, whose tendered Biipport could not be refused. He said that gross malpractices hnd taken place at the Arrow, that he would call for a scrutiny, and that probably the result of the election would bo reversed. He accused the officials of supporting Mr Hauphton, and said that Ai row town had been pitted against Qneenstown. He had I'eeu supported everywhere exempt at the Airow. Ho also thanked Mr Dohey and Mr liobortson for their support. Much chaffing went on during his speech Mr Hdllenstein said that he had supported the principle of the South Island as against the North Island. Only one official voted. Messrs Hillenstein and Robertson's support was most powerful in behalf of Mr Shepherd. Opposition against the return of that gentlemen to tho Provincial Council is being orgnnised. The intense bent is breaking up. The thermometer registered only 80 degrees in the shade to-day.

Bluff, January 27th. The Airedale made an excursion trip fo Stcwait's Island to-day. She left tho Bluff at 10 30 a.m , with about 50 passenaers, and eneounrered rather a roush sen. in the Straits. She anchored -at one o'clock in Half Moon Buy, where lunch was partaken of, «nd a fevr of the passengers, residents in the locality, were landed. She then steamed round to Patersou'a Inlet, the finest lmrbor in New Zealand, called afc Port William, and left the Island at 4 30 p ra., reaching the Bluff at fi 30 p.m. The excursionists seemed to thorouzhly enjoy the trip.

Featherstojt, January 30th. The Wairnrapn election took pl-ico to day, and resulted as follows : — Mr H. Bunny, 203 ; Rev. J. C. Andrew, 200; Mr C. Pharuzyn, 102. The two former were declared duly elected.

Wanganui, January 30fch. Mr J. Brjce wa* returned to-day without opposition to represent Wiuwanui in the General Assembly. Much apathy prevails hero.

Balcidtha, January 30th. The poll for the Clutha election took place to day. The following is the result according to the returns from Balcluthft, Warepa, and Inch Clutha :—Thomson, 80 ; Macandrew, 33 ; Richardson, 29 ; Mosley, 13.

Wellington, January 31st. A proclamation has been issued, bringing the Land Transfer Art into operation in the Provinces of Auckland, Wellincton, Canterbury, and Otago tomorrow. Mr D F. Main io appointed Registar, and Mr A. W. Smith Examiner of Titles, for Otago ; and Messrs J. S. Williunn »nd R C. Doyly to eimilar posts in Canterbury.
