MR. STEWARD AND MR. MACASSEY AT OTEPOPO.
Both candidates addressed tlie electors in the School-house on Monday evening. There were about 100 persona present. Mi* W. Mason, who occupied the chair, introduced the canditates in a pithy speech, and asked for a fair hearing. He intimated that it had been arranged that Mr Steward should first address the meeting, and that gentleman, who was well received, then proceeded to dilate upon the various political topics of the day. After enunciating his views with regard to the Immigration and Public Works Policy of the Eox-Vogel Government, he spoke at some length on the Protection v. Free Trade question, being frequently applauded throughout his address. After touching upon the native policy, and urging vigorous and decisive action, he said that as the hour was late and he was anxious not to weary the meeting, and in order that his opponent (Mr Maecassey) might hava the utmost fairplay, he would leave untouched several matters to which he intended to have referred. (Cheers.) Mr Maecassey, who on rising was received with applause, in a clear and forceabie speech advocated his views as to the various questions of the day reiterating the opinions expressed at his meeting in Oamaru. Both speakers were awarded a patient hearing, and, subsequently, several questions were put to each candidate. The Chairman then called for a show of hands for each, the result being as follows : — Steward : 20 ; Macassey : 10. A vote of thanks to the chair, terminated the proceedings.
