THE FAMILY OF JACOB SNIDER.
In the army estimates an item of £1,700 is entered to be paid to the representatires of Jacob Snider, whose inrention for the oonrereion of muizle-leadinr rifles into breaoh-loaders has been adopted to the •xtent of 500,000 arms. In Jane, 1866, poor Snider, worried by oreditora, besonght a grant of £2,700 for "serriees" and drawings. Before any oonohuion was arrived at, the mortgagees of Snider'i patent compromised bis claim with Government for £1,000. Snider was at that time upom hi«~ deathbed, unable to remonstrate against a wrong. Not one ■hilling of that thousand pound every reached liim or his children. At last, four years after his death* considering the rery distressing oironmstaooes in whioh the members of his family are placed, the Government hare granted £1,700 to his widow and children, to be seonred for their benefit. It is rery Httio after all. The whole sum of £2,700, including the 41,000 swallowed up by the mortgages, giret BMrlj one penny farthing for etoh rifle oonrerfced on the Snider's principle.
