ADJOURNED LICENSING MEETING. (Before T. W. Parker, Esq., R.M., and H. Clapcott, and S. Gibbs, Esqs., J.P's.)
General licenses were granted to Michael Hanley, Boundary Creek Hotel, William M'Kenny, Kartigi Hotel, and G-eorge Campbell, Devonshire Hotel, Eakanui mouth. The adjourned application of John Henry Zierk, for a General License for the Oamaru Hotel was considered. Applicant submitted a plan of proposed alterations in the building, and Sergt. Bullen stated that great improvements had been already effected. The bedrooms had been enlarged and newly ceiled, and the whole building had been raised. The Resident Magistrate said that ho felt considerable hesitation in granting the application, as his brother Magistrates -were divided upon the matter. However, he would give the applicant the benefit of the doubt, but he would understand that the license would nob issue till the let of next month, and that if the proposed improvements were not carried out, a representation would be made by the Bench to prevent its issuance. A Bottle License was granted to Thomas Hastie. The application of Christian Hille lapsed, there being no appearance on behalf of applicant.
(Before H. Clapcott, and S. G-ibbs, Esqs., J.P.'e.) Night Licenses were granted to Thomas Procter and George Newey, the Bench remarking that the town, had somewhat advanced since last year, when a similar application was refused. The Bench felt bound to take notice of a remark made by Mr Allan by, who appeared for the applicants on last licensing day, to the effect that there had been partiality on the part of the Bench in the granting of nightlicenses. At the time night licenses were granted for the Northern and Star and Garter Hotels, those were the only applications before the Bench, so that the Bench could not, had they been so disposed, have shown any preierence. Mr AJlanby begged to explain that his remarks had been misunderstood. He had not referred to the past but had said, speaking of the future, that if licenses were granted to particular houses and refused to others for the current yeer, there would appear to be injustice done to some of the applicants. He had not intended any disrespect to the Bench. The presiding Magistrate said that he did not suppose Mr Allanby meant to show any disrespect to the Bench, but he felt bound to notice the remark, as it might have been bo understood.
It is reported thac Spain has offered 30,000 troops to garrison Borne in the event of a European war.
