TOTORA ANNUAL RACES.
The sixth annual racos at Totora came off od Cliristma9 Day, on the racing ground in the, thousand acro paddock, Opposite the Fortifications Tho caiy distance from totra induced the presence of a good sprinkling of our townspeople ; and a very Large, number of equestrians from tho adjoining stations and country had likewise determined to witness th* annual sports-. The kindly forethought of the much respected Ladies of Totora, in providing refreshment* for all on the course vrho chose to partake thereof deserves special notice. The Only drawback to tho whole was the absence of Mr Henry Campbell, who from the first has taken a very warm interest in th« races. Thto stewards on this occasion wei?6 Messrs T. Allan, R. Huuter, James S. Holmes, W. Gh Hardy, and John H. M'Lean ; Judge, Mr R. Hunter; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr D. M'Fadyen ; Clerk of Courso> Mr R. Loar j Starter, Mr Waddell. Tho following is a short account of the sport* :—^ Maiden Plate. — for all horses on the Stations of Totora, Ardgowau, Moeraki and Awamda, that had never won a race — 1 mile — Entrance XI, with 434 added. Holmes' Bachelor ... ... ... 0 After a capital start, Arnigal took the lead, and kept it tbroughdut, winning by any length : Ultima and Bachelor made a splendid race for second place Totora Cup.— £10, with £1 entries added— 2 miles-. O Holmes and Campbell's br m Chatty ... 0 True Bill won easily,— Marian a good second. Tradesmens' Pubse.— (given by the Tradesmen of Oamaru) Value £20. 3 miles— £1 entries. McLaren's br g Tommy .., ... 0 After a capital start, all kept well together to tho first turn, Fossicker taking tho lead, which he kept till going down tho courso the second time, whefli Helen challenged for first place. She did not keep it ; the heavy ground and tho distanc6 was now telling on mdst by this time. Fossicker led and -won easily ; Miss Foote well up, but giving second place to Helen. The rider of Helen entered a protest against Fossicker on the ground of rurtaing inside a post. Pretest was allowed and stakes given to Helen. Abdoowan Cut?.— jEIO with £l entries added ; 1* miles. 77. Young's Sprite ... ... ... 1 Holmes and Campbell's Arnigal ... ... 2 J. Holmes's Prospero ... . 4 . ... 0 R. M'Laren's Dora ... ... ... 0 R. Hunter's Mustang ... ... ... 0 Sprite won. Arnigal ran a long way off the course, but got in and made a fair second. The Consolation Stakes finished the programme, though not the races. Four entries, viz., Marian, Miss Foote> Bachelor, and Fossicker. Fossicker ran as gamely as ever, and won easily ; Miss Foofco well up, for second. Afterwards thero were two Hurry Scurry racesj a Trotting race, and a foot race, which ended the sports. The weather was favorable throughdut, and all wore highly pleased. One or two " spills " 0c--currod during the day, but no accident of any eoriotu kind took place.
