VICTORIA AND THE PANAMA SERVICE.

The "Sydney Morning Heiald," of the 1st Augiibt, says : — The Government of Victoria, on the understanding that they could avail themselves of the postal service vi.i Panama for the conveyance of letter?, although declining to contiibute towards the subsidy iu June last, dispatched a mail to New Zealand, with the view of having it placed on bo.nd the Knikoma, for transmission, to Panama ; but the Government of this colony knowing that a laige and iucieasing trade was glowing up between Victoria and Ameiica, and anticipating the dispatch of a mail by this route by the Victoiian postal authorities, sent a -dispatch by the K.iikouia to the Government of New Zealand, intimating that the Government of this colony, as contributor of a lar<re poitiou of the subsidy, would require the Government of that colony to refuse to transmit by the Panama Mailships all m iils other than those from the different pait of New Zealand and New South Wales. The result was that the New Zealand Government, acting on tins dis>pateh, rejected the mail from Victoria, and it was left belaud. The Goveinmuut of this colony has, we understand, more recently addressed tho several colonial Governments which do not contiibute towards tho subsidy, notifying that all letters intended for tiansmissiou to Amoiiuo. or Euiope via the 1'u.uania m.ul-boats must como through Sydney, in order teat tho Govcrnmont of this colony may derive tho benefit of the additional podtago.
