TIMARU. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Timaru, 23rd July, 1866.
The general complaint down hero lately has been the want of water, and most certainly the past week must have satisfied the most of the complainers, aa rain, rain, rain lias been the order of the day and night too : tauks well filled, rivers too much to, and the highways and byeways in the most muddj-like condition possible. As a natural consequence, you are obliged to begin with the weather, and precious little more newi it there down here to send you — if news you can call it. Ernest Gray was, I believe, duly returned tor Ihe Waitangi, although it came to a poll, owing to Mr Travers not putting in the usual declaration of withdrawal. The poll, as at present reported, was — Gray, 6 ; Travers, 0. MrTraverfl was merely proposed aa a factious opposition to the Hon. E. Gray ; and although Mr Travers got a large majority by show of hands, on the loser demanding a poll, he (Mr Tr&vers) -mis by his supporters withdrawn from the contest -, but, as stated above, not being present to sign the declaration, the poll was compelled to go on. Now, a pretty expense it has cost the Government j but it is an old and true saying — " Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise. By the Wellington returns, I see that an enquiry will take place relative to the prosecution of Robert D'Oyly by the Resident Magistrate here for libel, and it has caused some excitement in the district, especially as to who is likely to be mulcted as to cosU. I Nearly all the hotels, accommodation houses, &c, about here are changing hands j and ft full field-day of magistrates may bo expected on this event on tha first Tuesday of next month.
