THE MAYORALTY.

(To the Editor of the Oamaru Times.) Sir, — What a pity it is that your correspondent, " S. Gibbs" did not close his would-be elaborate letter without the aid of language such as is, alas, but too common amongst the uneducated and ill-bred of the human race. Mr Gibbs identifies mo with " Elector," but what does he mean by "Fenian?" — I am a loyal British subject, and as a Briton am entitled to bo considered brave. Tho shark is a courageous fish, the cuttle fish a queer one ; tho latter, when closely pursued by any formidable foe, ejects a dark-colored filthy fluid, which not only clouds the water so as to conceal his retreat, but at the same thno renders it so loathsome as to deter his pursuer from continuing tho chase. I must decline, sir, to even contest tho election with Mr Gibbs, or to flap my tail in the same pool with the cuttlo fish ; 1 profer clean water bo it ever so hot. MrGibbsinhislettersays, "Theabove sketch — rough though it may be — will give the citizens some practical idea to guide them in the forthcoming election ;" but I trust, sir, that tho sketch (rough though it may bo) appearing in tho paragraph of his letter immediately following the one just quoted, will give the citizens some practical idea of the manner in which Mr Gibbs will (if elected) uphold the dignity of Mayor, and also some practical idea of the language to which tho Town Councillors may frequently be subjected, compared to which the word " whelp" is but a term of endearment. Yours, &c, Solomon Gttbbins.
