SELECT POETRY. THE GIPSY GIRL.
Bt Anne op Gieirstein. You tell me that the world is gay, That in it Lmight sliine — That I hare but to follow thee, And wealth and power are mine. You say that I am beautiful, That, all would bend to me, But my heart still clings to the merry greenwood, And the gipsy's life so free. With sparkling gems and costly pearls, You braid my long, black hair $ With taste and skill you robe my form, In silks both rich and rare. But, ah ! a wreath of flowers wild Is dearer far to me, - For my heart still clings to the merry greenwood, And the gipsy's life so free. You offer me a splendid home, In halls of pomp and pride, But the leafy glade and gipsy tent Are dearer than all beside. I care not for your mansions proud, They have no charm* forme, For my. heart still clings to the merry greenwood, And the gipsy's life so free. What though I follow thee away, And o'er the world should roam, Oil ! where could I find a happier spot Than the gipsy's forest home ? Then leave me now and tempt no more, I cannot go with thee ; For my heart sfcill clings to the merry greenwood, And the gipsy's life so free.
