THE EAST COAST.
Our files from Hawke's Bay are to the 5th instant.' - On the morning of the 6th instant, Captain Reid arrived at Napier from Poverty Bay, having come down expressly to seek protection for the settlers there. The Europeans and Friendlies are threatened by large bodies of Hau-Efaus, and both settlers and loyal natives are urgent in their requests for assistance, in men and arms. It is thought probable that Mr M'Lean, as Government Agent, will send them 31 men who had volunteered out of the company of military settlers for active service, and who were intended to be sent to Wakpu. The Provincial Government p.s. Huntress, Captain Stalker, left Napier on the 1st inst,, for Hick's Bay, where she arrived on the night of Saturday, the 2nd, after a passage of 38 hours. Pound H'M.S. Brisk lying at anchor there, with Major Von Tempsky on board, waiting for the ships of the Opotiki expedition. The Colonial Government s.s. St. Kilda, Capt. Deck, arrived at Napier on the 5th inst. She came into port covered with Hau-hau flags, chiefly taken at Tokomaru and Hick's Bay, in both which places the friendly natives have attacked and beaten the Hau-haus. There had been some native fighting at Waiapu, in which several of the enemy were killed. The stronghold Pukeniaire remains intact, and is being garrisoned from all parts. It is impregnable without artillery. This Mr M'Lean has sent for, but with what result is not yet known.
