RUNAWAY HORSES.
(To the Editor of the OaMABU TlMKS.) Sib,— On reading in your last issue the account of that unfortunate accident to one of Mr M'Master's horses at Waikanui, it occurred to me that the yery simple method used in Canada and the United States to prevent horses from running away does not appear to be known or adopted here. It is simply a weight of say 10 or 12 lbs. attached to a a strap of leather sufficiently long to reach from the ground to the horse's mouth. This weight and strap are carried in the carriage till wanted, when it is hooked on to the bit, which holds the horse as effectually as if held by a " tiger." I cannot say positively that it is lawful there to leave horses in the streets thus he d, but I can tay that the practice is general and the police do not interfere. So that we must come to the conclusion that it is a legal protection to have the horses thus secured. Should this b| worthy of space in your valuable paper you may insert it. « Yours, &c, J. Clbndinnen. Oamaru, 13th September, 1865.
