TARANAKI.
The "Southern Cross," of the 2nd instant, contains the following : — By the s.s. Wangamri, which arrived from Taranaki and the White Bluff yesterday, we learn that the troops, consisting of part of the 43rd and 70th Regiment's, also some Mounted Rifles and Bushrangers, had taken possession of the Pukearuhe Pa, at tho White Bluff, and that William King and Adam Clark, both rebel chiefs, had come in and sworn allegiance. Colonel Warre is at Opoiniaki, about one mile south of Namu. It was said that the troops would march on the 2nd of May from tlio Warea, where they are stationed, overland to Opounaki. By the schooner Tawera, from the East Coast, intelli- I "•enco has been brought to Tiwai that Kereopa, on his return from Poverty Bay to Opotiki, was there seized by the Natives, by whom he has been bound. Tiwai, with great promptitude, wrote down to hia own people, inquiring the truth of the matter, and asking whether they consented that ho should go down to Opotiki and bring Kereopa up to Auckland to take his trial. On receipt of a letter in reply, giving him permission to do so, Tiwai proposes setting off and apprehending tho murderer. Tho report of the capture of Kereopa rests, as yet, entirely upon native authority ; but we must recollect that we have no dirtct communication with Opotiki. Wo may add that Tiwai does not place entire reliance on the rumor ; but his prompt action on the vague report is very creditable to him. Tiwai has already done good service to tho Emopeans, and the capture of Kereopa would entitle him to their lasting gratitude. As it is, he has been left comparatively unprovided for since he came to Auckland.
