The members of the Pilot Board met at Dunedin on Friday; present— W. H. Reynolds, Esq., T. Taylor, Esq., Captains Thomson, Robertson and M'Kinnon. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the President read a letter from the Provincial Government, stating that the pilots had offered to take over the pilot service, and that the Government acceded to this, on the understanding that the pilots should keep and pay tho two pilot apprentices. It was stated to the Board that the pilots objected to the payment of salaries to the two apprentices, and that, if the Government would relive them of the expense, they were willing, in all due respects, to take over the service. The Board, after consideration, recommended that the Government should either concede to the terms proposed by the pilots, or otherwise retain the service in their ovn hands as at present. It further resolved that they could not undertake the duties connected with the Board, unless the Government would place a sum of £200 per annum on the Estimates for the expenses of the Board:. They also recommended that the Provincial Government should urge on the General Government the necessity of altering the thirty-eighth clause of the Marine Board Act, so as to make it compulsory on all masters of vessels to take pilots, or, failing that, to pay pilot dues, with the customary exceptions. At the request of the Board, the chairman (Mr Reynolds) agreed to forward copies of these general minutes to the Provincial Government and the meeting adjourned.— Times. We understand that the Otago Steamship Company (the present contractors for carrying the English mails ) ■will in future land and receive the Southland portion at Bluff Harbor Wharf. Although the contract is precisely the same as the former one, viz :— "To call at the Bluff Harbor, weather permitting," — the Company admit the injury done to the Province by the above clause, and will as far as possible endeavor to avoid putting the colony to the expense, and the Province to the risk of receiving its mail as it ha3 hitherto done. — Southland •Times.
