The Provincial Council of Southland has elected as Superintendent, neither J>r. Menzies nor Mr. Heale, but Mr. Taylor, by an absolute majoriry of 11, meaning a majority of the whole Council. Mr. Taylbr ' is well kndwn as a zealous public man. A good deal of alarm appears to have been excited at Auckland in the end of last month by an outrage committed by the natives, at the house of Mr. Meiklejohn, Matakana, which induced a visit of several of the Ministry to the spot in the "Wonga "Wonga. The inhabitants of the Auckland Province are now getting uneasv at the removal of the troop3. The " Taranaki Herald" reports : — " A large party of the natives came up on Monday in the Plying Cloud from the Chatham Islands, including Te Rakatau and other leading men of Ngatirahire. It is understood their object is to endeavour to sell certain lands to the northward of Waitara, in the neighborhood of Mimi and elsewhere ; but some of the resident Ngatirahire, we hear, are not as yet willing to sell, and proppse to let the land instead. The 30, 40, or 50 of the Taranaki natives who have been coming in to surrender for the last fortnight have come so slowly that they are nob yet here. "We hope to have something more definite to give concerning them next week."
