MECHANICS' , INSTITUTE.
A meeting of the Oairiaru Mechanics Institute was held on 12th January, 1865. Present— Messri Parker (in the chair), Black (hon.' «ecretary),> Reid, Ingram, Sumpter, Locke, and Gib"bs. It was agreed that, in reference to a site supposed to be reserved by the Government for. the Institute,' the Hon. Secretary should write to Mr Short, and e.n<iuire whether the Government had recognised the reserve as made by him at the last sale. It was also agreed that the Secretary should communicate with the Secretaries of the Athenaeum, Dunedin, and'Mechanic9"Institute, Timaru,' and =isk for a copy of their rules and number 1 of Subscribers, &c. Proposed'by Mr, Black,, seconded by Mr Reid, " That a further appeal be made to, the public, by inserting the advertisement in the Oamaru' Times, together with the names of the • Committee ; and that each member or Committee be supplied' with a list, and requested to use his best exertions to obtain subscribers.''- '. .1 /' The offer by the publishers of the newspaper to insert the advertisement gratia, was accepted with .thanks. ,
