County Engineers’ Report

All apology was sustained from Cr. F. A. Geddes at the monthly meeting of the Mangonui County Council her-i on Wednesday, with Cr. I. J. Berghan presiding. Mr. A. M. Theed, County Engineer, made report as follows : Much of the period has oeen wet and some weak spots have shown up. However, the consolidation of loosened surfaces is generally satisfactory and many miles of road ar c much better than during the drought period. Main Highways : No. 4(K IVa .iuiAhipara. Grading has been clone and 6 c.yds. of metal were delivered on a weak place. No. 481. Kaitaia-Mo-tukaraka—Regular grading was don", tables opened and one culvert repaired. The section from Kaitaia to Wainui cut up badly under heavy fast traffic (mainly metal and sand) and a total of 200 i c.yds. of repair metal has been delivered. No 518. Tama-puria-Oruru—This road is in generally fair order and has been graded twice. Some weak sp.,.ts are now being repaired. No. 562. Wairapaka-uri-Awanui —Surface has Been kept graded in and Hi c.yds. of repair metal were spread. Houhora Riding : Graders raked in on part of the North Roau. West Coast, Unahi, Spains and Sweetwater Roads. 3 c.yds. of metal were delivered on West Coast Road and 10 c.yds. on Spains Road. A slip was cleared and tables and culverts opened on North Road. Awanui Riding ; Grading was done on Quarry and Tokerau Roads and Rangiputa Road was re-shaped and widened over much of its length. A small deviation was also partly completed. Repair metalling included : Duncans 38 c.yds., Paraparu-Taumata 84 c.yds., Tokerau 12 c.yds., Pekerau 18 c.yds., and Zidich’s 6 c.ydv. Oruru Riding : Oruru-Taipa Road was graded and repair metal delivered to Oruru-Taipa 80 c.yds., and Farapara 69i c.yds. Redecking of Gardiners Bridge is in hand. Mangonui Riding : The following roads received repair metal—Handballs 9 c.yds., Hihi 72 c.yds., Oruaiti 24 c.yds. and S. Fosters 0 c.yds. One load was delivered on Cartons Bridge approaches, Mangonui-Orurc Road. It is intended to move a grider into this Riding now. Victoria Valley Riding . Graders have raked in Ruaroa, part Diggers Valley and Takahue Roads ar.d 34 c.yds. of repair metal were delivered to Diggers Valley Road come damage was caused on Tj, Rare Road where a subsidence requires widening, and various roads will now receive repair metal. Kaitaia Riding : Graders have worked on Church, Wireless, Bells, Larmers and Fryers Roads and 12i c.yds. of repair rneta' spread on Church Road. Further wpair metalling is now in hand on various roads. Small bridge on Bells Road was replaced. Her-ekino Riding : A bridge on Puhata Road was rebuilt on improved alignment and approaches put in. Repair metalling included : Diggers Valley 23i c.yds., Puhala 84 c.yds. and Owhata 14 c.yds. Considerable quarrying has been done in two quarries and metal will now be carted out. Ahipara Riding : Gram vs trued up Foreshore Road and Beach Township Streets and 7i c.yds. of metal were delivered to Foreshore Road. Repairs were done to the roan across the rocks leading to Tauroa Block, 15 c.yds. of meta'i being used. Public Pound : Some 'eveiling and draining wffs done and fh o flat prepared for sowing. Government Grant s : Wireless and Bells Roads— The grant monies were expended on metal. Rangiputa Road —Del very of pipes for culverts was commenced and two culverts were installed.
