No Water for 24 Hours

Borough to Clean Reservoir

From 9 a.m. oj Wednesday the 20th July until 9 a.m. on Thursday 21st July, the Borough will be without water, owing to the fact that a thorough cleansing of the reservoir and supply mains will take place during that period.

This was revealed at last night’s meeting of the Kaitaia Borough Council, when the Town Clerk, Mr. W. H. Atkins, informed the Council that the time was necessarily longer owing to certain work being insisted upon by the Health Department. Mr. Atkins showed the Council that the time was necessary to allow the reservoir to empty, and when this was done, the walls would be thoroughly scrubbed down and then sprayed with chloride of lime. Even though this was going to inconvenience the public to a little extent, he went on to say, they could be assured for many years to come of a pure water supply. It was shown that the task would be a large one, as the walls of the reservoir in its interior were eighteen feet high, and every inch had to be thoroughly scrubbed or scraped. Cr. Clark informed the Council that through the Superintendent of the

Kaitaia Fire Brigade, Mr. lan McKin- j non, aid from that body would be forthcoming in any manner that it could be given to speed up the work, providing that the town was left in no danger from fire by the tying up of fire fighting equipment or plant. It was also thought that perhaps a small supply of water might be given the town through the aid of the Fire Brigade by running a pipe-line as a 1 by-pass to the reservoir, though at ! present this could not be counted upon until a thorough inspection had been made by the Superintendent, the Borough Foreman and the Works Committee. Councillors expressed appreciation of this aid and were hopeful of what would come from it, but were of the opinion that the public should prepare for a complete cut-off of water supply through the hours mentioned, in ease nothing could be done to alleviate the coming position.
