County Engineer’s Report A fair amount of rain was experienced and weak places showed up. Newly graded roads became muddy on the surface but will improve with further rain. Houhora Hiding: No surfacework •was done. Ananui Riding : Growth was cut and tables opened on Church Road. 90 c.yds. of stiale were delivered to Tokerau Beach Road. | Oruru Riding : Galion Grader has shaped up Oruru-Taipa, Peria-Valley, I’aranui, Taylors, Dangens, Fern Flat, Thompsons, Honeymoon Valley and part of Blue Gorge Roads. Caterpillar tractor and tow grader worked on Blue Gorge road also. Repair metal included —Paranui and Taylors Roads 165 c.yds ; Honeymoon Valley, 15C c.yds. ; and Oruru Taipa, 11 c.yds Two large culverts were installed tc replace timber structures at Orun Flood area. Some minor repairs wer* done to several bridges. Mangonui Riding : Grader improved surface on Mangonui-Oruru Road This road was blocked by a slip bn is again open. Repair metal was de livered to Mangonui-Oruru, 154 c.yds. Hihi, 10 c.yds. ; Kohumaru, 384 c yds. and a few loads to Oruaiti- Road A small bridge on Hihi Road was re paired and also a culvert on Mill Ba; | Road. Victoria Valley Riding : Repai I metalling was done on Takahue Road 221 c.vds. and Diggers Valley, 47

c.yds. Metalling was commenced on I Takahue Cemetery Road where 50 I c.yds. were spread approximately half I the road being now metalled. It is | hoped to complete the work within a week. A bulldozer was used to extend the formation on Traceys Road and to reform Bakers Road. Two culverts were put in on the latter and tow grader will be used to shape up | and form tables. Tow grader and tractor cut tables cn Carrs Road and opened up a shingle pit for Cemetery Road metalling. Minor bridge repair was done. Kaitaia Riding : Tow grader raked | in metal on Ruaroa Road, where eon- | siderable cutting back of growth was done. Twenty-five c.yds. of metal j were spread on the road also. Clearj ing of growth and opening of tables j was done on Church Road and some | corners will now be widened by a j bulldozer. Her e kino Riding : Repair metalling | was 18c.yds of shingle on Waiotehue Road and 15c.yds on Derricks Road. ! Repair metalling on roads in this Riding will now be put in hand. Ahipara Riding : Deck repairs were | done on Epakauri Road Bridge. Government Grants Okakewai Read : Tow grader outfit improved formation and opened outlet drains from culverts. Metalling is to be started now. Oruru-Taipa Flood Area : Re-align- ; nic-nt and raising of road level is making good progress. Plant Plant—Graders : Overhaul of Auto Patrol Grader is complete and it went back into commission today. Galion Grade r had another breakdown, losing approximately a week’s work. Caterpillar tractor and tow grader were repaired and have been working for the past three weeks. Trucks : The International Truck overhaul was completed and a new body built by Council Staff. The truck is working on metal repair etc Portable Crusher : Practically no work was done on this plant owing tc the staff being fully occupied on other machines. General —Bpilding Perits : 30 permits aggregating £9736 W'ere issued for March. Fire Permits : It is proposed to lift the fire restrictions over the County area on 30/4/49.
