CRICKET
On Sunday a representative side of the Mangonui Cricket Association played a game against combined Eastern County and Whangaroa at Coopers Beach, Mangonui batting first made a total of 108 which seemed little enough in view of the strength of the batting side fielded by Mangonui, but the reply of the opposition with 35 was particularly weak. Mangonui’s second innings, after an agreement had been reached to make play of ar. hour’s duration for both sides, proved to be considerably more virile, Russell knocking up 44 before letiring, and N. Rogers 104 before being caught and bowled by Johnson. This was a very chancy knock, he being dropped nine times during the stand. In this 104, Rogers hit 12 sixes and j one four, and the side retired with three wickets down for 175. Eight bowlers in all were tried in an endeavour to dis- ; lodge Rogers and Russell. Eastern County in their second innings did much better, and at stumps were six down for 81, Dangen 19, J. Wrathall 14, Burdett 12, with Richardson 14 and Small 9 being the not l out batsmen. Mangonui had also tried seven bowlers, the most successful being Findlay with 3 for 36.
