Voting at Wednesday’s Poll

PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED I T!ie procedure to be followed in the I gaming and licensing polls on March . 9 is explained in a statemenc issued by the Electoral Department. ! Except for the King Country, Ash--1 niton and Geraldine, where special polls will be held, each elector will i eceive two voting papers. One would concern he gaming proposal for offI course betting and the other the hours for the sale of liquor in hotel bars. In the gaming poll the voter must strike out one of these two lines : | “I vote FOR the proposal.” | “I vote AGAINST the proposal.” ! On the liquor hours paper the voter i must strike out one of these two lines : ' “I vote FOR closing at 6 pan.” 1 “I vote FOR closing at 10 pan.” i The hours of voting will be from 9 a.m. to 7 pan. which will give most voters an opportunity to vote in their home district. The location of polling booths has already been advertised in the Press. All Maori and European electors, | including those residing in no-license districts, ar e eligible to vote at both ! polls. As in the General Elections, people away from their electorates, and unable to return before the close of the poll, will be able to vote at any polling place as absent voters. Persons unable to attend a polling place through sickness or other causes may vote as postal voters. These provisions also apply to the voting on the gaming and hours of sale issues in the Kin" Country, Ashburton and j Geraldine special areas, but on the local restoration and trust control issues only postal voting can be exercised and absent voting is not permissible.

ABSENT VOTING Electors who are temporarily away from the electorate in which they are registered and unable to return before the close of the poll should remember that facilities for absent voting are available for the Gaming and Licensing Tolls on March 9th on offcourse betting and hotel closing hours. People who wish to record an absent vote, says the Electoral Department, may do so at any of the authorised polling places. These facilities are not available for voting on the local licensing and restoration issues in the King Country and the Ashburton and Geraldine areas. Electors of those areas who know that they will not be able to vote in their own areas should apply now to their own Re- , turning Officer for postal voting facilities for their local polls. ® I Postal Voting Facilities Available Now Postal voting facilities for the gam- | ing and licensing polls to he conducti ed throughout New Zealand on March I 9th are already available. Electors who know that they will not be able to reach one of the appointed polling I places on the day itself because they are in hospital or will be temporarily away from the country, or on holiday in remote districts, or.for any other ) reason may use postal voting facilities. They should apply now to their returning officer for the appropriate papers. The Electoral Department emphasises that postal voting should not be left till the last minute. | Postal voting facilities are also available for the local polls on licensing or licensing restoration to be conducted in the King Country, Ashi burton and Geraldine special districts.
