Warship Arrives at Mangonui

WELCOMED BY COUNTY RESIDENTS This morning at 10.30 o’clock, H.M.N.Z.S. “Kiwi” turned into Mangonui harbour through the Heads. Though only one of the “small ships” of His Majesty’s Navy, and a diminutive member of the New Zealand Squadron, yet, nevertheless the Kiwi is part of a whole that has down through the history of the British Empire guarded our shores, and kept open our sealanes to and from the Motherland, the lanes that have knit ■he mightiest Empire ever known. Boats of all description were out bedecked to greet and escort the Kiwi to her berth, and after tying up alongside, the complement of the corvette w r as welcomed by a committee of local residents, the Mangonui County Council represented by Mr. T. H. E Wilton, who also represented the Awanui Harbour Board, and by the Mangonui R.S.A. represented by Mr. J. Gill, president, and Mr. W. R. j Langley, secretary. This afternoon, members of the crew w'ill be taken on a sight-seeing j tour, and this evening will be tender- i ed a dance at the hall in Mangonui. j Tomorrow, a cricket match will be ! played by a team from the com pie- i ment of the Kiwi against a side from ! the Eastern County. This will take place at Coopers Beach. In the evening, a smoke concert will be held in the crew’s honour by the members of the Mangonui Cruising Club. Further sight seeing trips will be arranged also for Wednesday afternoon, and very possibly Thursday morfKng, though at the present time it is not definitely known at what time the ship w’ill depart on that day. I On Wednesday afternoon, the Kiwi will be thrown open for public inspection
