County Council
-* 3EZS, • MONTHLY MEETING On Wednesday in the County Chambers, the monthly meeting of the Mangonui County Council was held with Mr. W. .J. Steed presiding. Special mention was made that a Cancer Campaign Fund drive should be made, and it was suggested that the residents of the county were not altogether aware of the position, and just how funds could be paid in to the list now open with the Town Clerk. To bring this before the residents to a greater degree, it was deci led that a Householder Circular be sent through the-post to all residents, and k was felt certain by the council that this would meet with a ready response from all. A report from the Health Inspector stated ' that the building which was now used as a store at Taipa w# unsuitable for such, and the new stire which the owners proposed to use, did not meet with the conditions laid down under the building permit. It was decided that the matter be left for the Health Department to serve the necessary notice on the occupants, with a view to having this state of affairs rectified. A complaint was received from the custodian of the Pukenui Wharf, in which he stated that some fishers from the wharf are in the habit of leaving fish offal and rotting bait on the wharf. This, he stated, was offensive to ill. and in addition pipis were left there until they were at a stage of putrification. He asked that the Council do something about the matter, and as a re-
suit, council decided to have a notice erected forbidding such practices, and threatening that such infringement would incurf prosecution. A letter was received from the '' iblie Works Department which stated that the tar-sealing of Motukaraka Road would involve the sum of £.‘!0.000, which, on a £3 to £1 subsidy basis, would mean that the Mangorui Council would be called on to find the sum of approximately £7,000. Mr. I. Berghan spoke most strongly on the matter, stating that he thought such representations could go on indefinitely, and asked that Council pass a resolution to have the road taken over as a State Highway and in the resolution asked that a copy of it should be forwarded to Mr. S. Smith, Member for ihis electorate of Hobson. With little discussion on the i 'otter, council decided unanimously to adopt tflis procedure. It was decided by council to support the nomination of Mr. E. N. Clark to the Rehabilitation Committee Representative. When the Northland appeal for the “Aid for Britain” campaign came before the council, council was of the opinion that there was sufficient support coming from, and sufficient parcels going from other organisations within the county, to preclude tn< Council taking any active part in the campaign. They w'ere entirely in sympathy with the project, but as a body, there was little that ceaild b-. done. Mrs. I). Fox is visiting friends i Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards have return ed to Auckland. They have beem hoi' daying with Mr. and Mrs. 11. Mclntosh.
