Top-ranking Pairs Highlights of the sen.or pairs championship during the week were the surprise defeats of three of the favourite combinations for the title. The reigning champions, Braith-

waite and Parker, lost a life to the promising partners, E. Clark and J Crosby by one point, 16-15. The lat--1 ter pair have entered for the New . Zealand title this season and their initial debut was an inspiring one. Past champions on several occasions, J. Cowie and R. Lewis, also i lost their opening game, the reverse ■ , coming from another new ccmbinai tion, R. Northwood and J. Steen; 2221 was the score—close enough to be either way. The losers were unlucky on several occasions that the “breaks” ran against them. It was not their day. } The results of the afore-mentioned matches were only mild in comparison to the upset caused by A. Sharon and H. Carr when they defeated the formidable pair, R. Michie and C. Werner in the second round. Sharon, a second-year player is still eligible fo r the juniors and Carr, always steady and reliable, is practically unknown as a skip. . Field and Ryan entered into calculations when they defeated Gaudin and Maria, renowned for their steadiness, 25-14.
