Rugby Union Meeting
At a special meeting of the Mangonui Rugby Union on Wednesday evening, Mr. J. Cowie presided. Mangonui’s delegate on the North Auckland Union outlines the procedure for the southern tour of the N.A. reps . Congratulations of the Union were extended to the four Mangonui representatives selected Joe Murray, C. Stirling, S, White and K. Werner. On account of the players going by air from Auckland to Christchurch they were requested to limit their luggage to 35 lbs in weight. The team will assemble at Whangarei on Tuesday next, July 27th. The North Auckland Maori selector, Mr. Moses Yates, nominated the following Maoris for the N.Z. Maori team which would tour New Zealand in September—J. Murray, W. Hemi, J. Pene, C. Stirling, S. Urlieh and W. Thomas. On account of the Harding Shield challenge match being extended to August 16th, it was resolved to make arrangements with the North Hokianga Union to play the return match owing by the Mangonui Union on August 9th. Arrangements were also made for the Junior reps to play Hokianga as a (curtain-raiser to the above "game. Competition matches would be cancelled on that date if the Hokianga Union approved of the arrangements. Members spoke in appreciative terms of the Northern Wairoa hospitality, both by Union officials and supporters extended to the Greyhounds on their recent visit to Dargaville, and Mr. Boyd revealed that a return match would be the principal feature at Kaitaia tomorrow. Permission was given the Primary Schools Union to travel to Kaikohe on August 9th and £lO was granted towards the expenses of assembling the team. Prior to the Union meeting, the Judicial Committee, Messrs. J. T. B. Taaffe (chairman), L. Morpeth, L. West and W. met and considered what penalties would be imposed on the players ordered off the playing field in the Awanui-Te Kao match last Saturday. On account of non-attendance, two weeks’ suspension, and two further weeks for the offence were imposed on J. Noble (Te Kao) and P. Phillips (Awanui) for fighting. The case of the Te Kao player ordered off for foul 1 lay was suspended until his correct name was submitted. ANGLICAN LADIES’ GUILD 500 EVENING A good attendance was recorded- at the card evening held by the Anglican Ladies’ Guild in the Parish Hall cn Wednesday and all those present voted if a most enjoyable and successful function. The family atmosphere was preserved with the assistance of a cosy fire which crackled cheerily on the hearth while the cards were flying and tin the delightful supper was consumed, when the players departed for their homes. The company’s thanks are due to Mesdames G. Molloy, H. Timbers, E. Nilsson and E. Jameson who contributed largely towards the success of the entertainment by faithfully discharging the duties of hostesses. Highest scorers were Mrs. E. Ramsey and Mrs. Murray Atkin who played as a gentleman, while runners-up were Mrs. Marks and Mr. Fields. 1
