The results of last Saturday’s games effected some surprises, but the competition is still very close. There will be no games next Saturday, Show Day. * With three matches to play to conclude the final round, the points are now Nomads 37, Mangataiore 36, Kaitaia 34, Victoria Valley 21, Peria 17. VALLEY’S FINE WIN By 87 runs on the first innings, Victoria Valley defeated the Kaitaia team at the Valley ground on Saturday. Having first use of the wicket, the" Valley opening batsmen gave their side a good start. The consistent Les Foster contributed 37, while R. Coulter gave perhaps the best display for 33. The following batsmen all gave sound displays with the result that the side scored the good total of 170 runs. Kaitaia in their innings made 83. C. Foster and N. Panther were mainly responsible for this small total. Their swerving, good length deliveries on the off had most of the batsmen in difficulties and several fine catches were taken on that side. R. Russell again batted extremely well for 37 while T. Bradford with 15 was the only other batsman to show form. Details of the scoring are as follows : Victoria Valley, Ist Innings F. I NOMADS DEFEAT MANGATAIORE I Nine wickets for 39 runs was the 1 magnificent bowling performance reg- | istered by Harry Findlay, the NoI mads’ slow spin bowler, against Ma- , - ngataiore on Saturday. , 1 It was Findlay’s bowling, backed up by good fielding that was responsible for Mangataiore’s cheap dismissal on their home ground. They failed to reach the Nomads’ first innings score by 38 runs. ! Nomads batted first and at one stage they had four wickets down for 23 runs. Howeved, B. Morpeth, 11. Findlay and L. Beazley improved the position and the side was out for 117. , The first three batsmen, Baker, i Northwood and Maddock were all well caught behind by Edwards off White. R. Harrison again bowled a sound length and he turned the ball well. Mangataiore’s innings realised 79 t runs. S. White was going well be- . fore he was well caught on the boun- ■ dary by J. Beazley. S. The Scouts could muster only 26 in their first knock and 23 in thei’.' second, while Mangataiore hit up 72 in their innings.
