Young Farmers’ Club

First Post-War Meeting of . District Committee Mr. E. Hansen presided over the first post-war meeting of the Kaitaia Young Farmers’ Club District Committee on Wednesday last. Delegates were present from the Kaitaia, Oruru and Broadwood Young Farmers’ Clubs, the A. and P. Association, the Federated Farmers and the Kaitaia Dairy Company. Officers remaining from pre-war days will carry on until the annual meeting in April, 1947. Delegates to the Auckland Provincial Council meeting in Whangarei next week were arranged for. Possible district activities were discussed together with probable arrangements for field days. It was announced that Mr. R. D. Hanlon had donated two special prizes for the Young Farmers’ Judging Competition to be held in conjunction with the next Kaitaia Show. This gesture was much appreciated by delegates. Special bat-oner and porker classes would operate for competition for young farmers in the next Show, it was reported. REMARKABLE BOM LING FEAT BY PRODUCT OF CRICKETING FAMILY Bevin Switzer, 13-year-old son of Mr. Stuart Switzer of Takahue, playing for Mangataiore juniors recently, performed something approaching a record. In his opening over he obtained 4 wickets with consecutive balls. In the next over he secured a hat trick, missed with the next ball and secured a wicket with the fifth. All these wickets were clean bowled. Showing surprising speed for a youth, Bevin is a promising boy. He is extremely keen on the game and is a product of a cricketing family. Mr. Stuart Switzer, his father, is a fine cricketer, having represented the Mangonui County on many occasions. Since accomplishing this feat, both grandfathers of Bevin are taking their full share of credit for the performance, and not without reason ; for grandad Henry Switzer is yet a very stylish bat and was a good allrounder. Granded Doug Kitchen played regularly over a long period of seasons. His brilliant fielding at silly point was an inspiration to his team-mates and a thorn in the side of the opposition. His throwing down of the wickets was always very deadly, while his running between the wickets was an object lesson to all. Always an enterprising batsman, Doug gained County honours and acquitted himself as capably as others we know. Both grandads are past members of the Victoria Valley team.
