War Memorials Ambitious as they appear, the plans to erect a Community centre as a memorial to the war dead of Kaikohe and surrounding districts met with the wholehearted approval of Kaikohe residents. Possessing as is does the need for a rest room, Plunket room and library, Kaikohe would do well to embody these amenities in the scheme. Those people who profess that a memorial should be surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere could not find fault with this. Too often do we see monuments erected in a burst of enthusiasm and the occasion giving rise to their erection soon forgotten. Nameplates deteriorate, inscriptions fade, the surrounding area becomes unkempt, so that to a stranger or a future generation, the monument conveys nothing. A proposal like that of Kaikohe’s if full of merit. As a fitting memorial to the fallen of both wars it would indeed serve a secondary purpose, providing a cultural dentre and a room where future generations of young New Zealanders would be cared for. A modern and suitably-named building would impress on residents and visitors alike the worthy cause responsible for its erection. FILM INTEREST IN DOMINIONS As British films become increasingly popular in the Dominions and Colonies, so the British public in its turn is more and more interested in films about the British Commonwealth which up till now with the exception of documentaries have been very few and far between. Ealing Studios are giving British film-goers one of their rare opportunities of familiarising themselves not only with the beauties of Australian scenery, but with something of the essential life of Australia. A new film, “The Overlanders,” is the story of the great cattle trek from Western Australia to Queensland, a change from all the similar stories we have seen with an American setting. With reports of coming films on India, Ceylon and Africa, it would not be surprising if in the near future a film was made depicting life in New Zealand.
