The Chastisement
OF OUR PEACE WAS UPON HIM On the first day of' Christ’s public ministry, John Baptist said of Him “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.” On the last day of His life this saying was fulfilled. It was the Jewish preparation of the passover, or the day on which the Passover Lamb was killed, and great numbers of Jews were in Jerusalem for the feast. On that day, the Lord Jesus was taken into the hands of men, His creatures, and He was crucified. His blood was shed, and His life was given. He became “The Lamb of God,” fulfilling in Himself all the meaning of the Old Testament sacrifices. The Jewish crowd first took the Lord before their own rulers, the High Priest, and the Council of the Jews. They mocked Him, smote Him, and spat on Him. Jesus was impassive and refused to reply to their mockery and questionings. “As a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so opened He not His mouth.” But when the High Priest adjured Him by the Living God to say whether He was the Christ the Son of God, He said plainly that He was. Pilate, to please the Jews, delivered the Lord to the Roman soldiery to be scourged and crucified. The whole band of soldiers was called together, and Jesus was stripped naked and beaten until the blood flowed.
