PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEWS Garden Party The annual Garden Party of the Women’s Missionary Union was held at the Manse on Wednesday last There was a large attendance of members, corresponding members from Awanui and visitors. Owing to the uncertainty of the weather, the fui ction had to be held indoors. Two competitions, “the identification of plants” and “riddles,” were won by Mrs. ShVlers and Mrs. Gill i espectively. A kdder-croaujt contest the only out-of doors attraction was won by Mrs. Shalders. A bring-and-buy stall conducted by Mrs. Beasley was well patronised. The serving of afternoon tea brought the afternoon to a close. Sunday School Function The end of the year party and pi ize-giving ceremony of the Kaitaia Sunday School was held in the Church grounds on Saturday last. There was a good attendance of children and parents. The function opened with a games period led by Miss A. Johnston, after which tea and drinks were served. The programme included a number of items by the children. The following were contributors : Songs—Shirley Whitburn, Judith Lewis ; Recitations—Lois Beatson, Colin Paulson ; Highland Fling—Helen Lewis ; Piano solo —Margaret Graham. A “Busy Bee” stall, conducted by Mrs. Cowie, realised the handsome amount of £3 which is to be sent to the Break of Day Xmas gift. The gathering concluded with the prizegiving and the singing by the children of the 23rd Psalm to the ancient tune “Covenanters.” * Missionary’s Death The tragic news has been received by the Director of Missions, Rev. D. N. Mac Diarmid, that Mrs. Muir, wife of Rev. Ivan Muir, has died at their mission station in the New Hebrides. Mr Muir is returning to New Zealand bringing with him their nine months’ old baby.
