After a dainty supper had been served, Mr. Bennett welcomed the lads and said everyone knew what the Maori Battalion had done, and both these lads had done their share. Tony had been a prisoner of war and had escaped after awhile, while Sam had been wounded more than once. He then made presentations to each as they had not had them before they left New Zealand. They were then given three lousing cheers. Sam replied on behalf of Tony and himself in quite a long and touching speech. He spoke of all whom he had left behind, also the two fallen who would never return, and the one who is a prisoner of war. They received a loud applause after which dancing continued.
