BULL BEEF SUBSIDY
When the executive meeting of the Auckland Farmers’ Union was held recently in Auckland, reference was made to the increase in the subsidy on bull beef to six shillings per hundred, announced by the Minister of Marketing, bringing the tota' price to nine shillings a hundred. Mr. R. R. Blade, chairman of the meat committee, said it was estimated that bulls killed during the coming season would be 30,000. On that basis the cost of the subsidy would be approximately £45,000, and as it would come out of the meat pool it was only a comparatively small refund of the farmers’ own money. Mr. A. J. Campbell (Waikino) said that many of the surplus bulls would not be available for quittance until October or November, and he suggested that the period for closing the subsidy should be extended beyond the date at present fixed, namely September 30th. It was decided to support this suggestion.
