Awanui News

Fancy Dress Dance Fun and frivolity was the order of the evening last Monday when the Awanui Patriotic Committee held a Vice-Versa and Fancy Dress Ball in the Awanui Hall. Fully three-quar-ters of those present were in fancy dress and a marvellous variety of costumes were present. Eastern, Period and Pierrot outfits, also Columbines, Hawaiians, even down to the humble “swagger,” were all in evidence, while the “ladies” and “gentlemen” were there in all their beauty —and as far as some of the so-called “iadies” were concerned this was of a heavy and sticky variety. While there was a decided absence of large and brawny males, there were certainly some unusually hefty “women” but as each new arrival entered the hall the crowd gave them a rousing reception. One “lady,” who spent three hours “doing up,” got only as far as the door, and taking “stage fright” at the noise he hastily retired and went home and changed. The evening was a wonderful sue cess from a financial as well as social side, and the funds of the Society will benefit by a considerable amount. The music and supper were excellent, the former being in the capable hands of Mrs. Stitt and Mr. A. Logan, while the latter was left in the hands of the Committee who, as usual, made an excellent job of their responsibility. Extras were played by Miss Joyce Christensen. The co;'petit ion vva won by Mr. Gus Yates. Mr. Cliff Ball very efficiently carried out the duties of m.c. Purely Personal The lovely weather over the weekend drew large crowds to the beach. Mr. Ball Snr. is at present visiting his son, Mr. C. Ball of Awanui. Blr. and Mrs. Nelson Mcßlullen are on a visit to the North. Mr. Mcßlullen is on military leave.

Victoria Valley Farewells Soldiers A very successful and well organised function marked the official farewell of Victoria Valley soldiers on Monday night, the evening later being voted a grand sucess. Mr. Ben White was m.c. and music was supplied by Mrs Walter and Mr. Wally Christensen. Presentations were made to Bob Harrison and Allen Tracey who were accompanied by a number of their military friends.
