Oruru School Picnic There was quite a happy gathering at the Oruru School Children’s annual picnic, which was held in Mr. A. Maria’s paddock. The day was very hot, but ice creams were served at the most opportune moments. After a delicious lunch had been partaken of, Mr. R. Yates soon set things moving and in no time the races had begun, details of which are as follows : 5 to 6 years.—Billie Yates 1, Dickie Foster 2, Jimmy Burke 3. Standard 1. Marlene Yates and Marie Walmsley tied for first place, Elsie Burke 3. Standards 3 and 4.—Zeta Lambly 1, Margaret Downes 2, Lola Walmsley 3. Boys, Standards 5 and 6.—Brian Jacentho 1, Ralph Taylor 2, Joey Francis 3. Young Girls.—Nancy Jacentho 1, Joan Garton 2, Elva Francis 3. Boys’ and Girls’ 3-legged race. During the afternoon a display of folk dancing was given by the children, after which the Secretary (Mr. Taylor) presented the prizes, each child receiving a book. Mr. Taylor then thanked the teacher, Mr. Kirk, for his untiring efforts to make the picnic such a success. Afternoon tea was served and at the conclusion a lollie scramble brought the happy function to an end. Purely Personal Mr. Brown Yates is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Yates, while on military leave. Mr. Roy Gear is on leave from Burnham military camp and is visiting friends in the district. Mr. and Mrs. J. Pearson have left for a holiday at the Hauraki Plains.
Mr. G. T. Yates has returned to his home after several weeks in hospital. Mr. J. Hanna is spending part of his military leave visiting friends. Mr. B. Martin is spending his military leave with his mother. Mr. F. Noble-Beasley of Blenheim is visiting his paren’o at Cable Bay. Mr. Alf Hancox paid a short visit to Whangarei during the week. Corporal R. (Brownie) Nesbitt is an inmate of the Kaitaia Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Wood were guests of the latter’s parents prior to their departure for Auckland, where Mr. Wood will join the staff of the Onehunga School. Miss F. Wilkinson, who has been staying with Mrs. H. Leckner for the past three months, returns to her home in Auckland this week.
