MANGONUI LOSES DARGAVILLE SHIELD Rodney Annexes Coveted Trophy After successfully defending the Dargaville Shield on four occasions since winning it from Northern Wairoa at Dargaville in December 1938, Mangonui lost it to their keen sporting rivals, Rodney, by 17 runs on the first innings at Victoria Valley last week. Remembering the wonderful game between these two Associations last April, another keen contest was anticipated, and although the same dashing play was not witnessed some good cricket was shown by several men. Thanks to W. Thompson and other local players, the ground was prepared until it resembled Eden Park, and the ladies of the district excelled (if possible) their wonderful reputation in catering for the teams and spectators and this department was the subject of much complimentary comment.

Rodney batted first, and with 7 down for 85 were in a poor position, but the local catching slipped and the side made 134.

Mangonui started well, Fred Pan-

ther and Wrathall taking the score from 9 to 41 for the second wicket when the latter was brilliantly caught. The local captain carried on steadily and eventually made 57 not out, but a consistently steady attack was too good for the other batsmen and they were all out for 117 at stumps on the first day’s play. Commencing their second innings on Friday morning, Rodney set about consolidating their position, and batted nearly all day for eight wickets (declared) at 262. R. Dunning played a wonderful knock for 99. With 70 minutes left for play, Wrathall (34) and Rogers (20) made 50 in half -an - hour and looked as though they would play out time, but as the crowd were clamouring for “fireworks” they and following batsmen had a “dip” and a somewhat slow day’s cricket ended when Mangonui had thrown away 7 wickets for 89 runs. Messrs. Ben White and John M. Dawson umpired throughout. Following are the detailed scores : Rodney, Ist Innings R. Dunning, c F. Panther b W. Thompson 39 W. Dunning, c S. White b W. Dawson 4 F.
