MANGATAIORE V. HEREKINO Another Century to N. Rogers A match played on the Mangataiore ground last Saturday resulted in a win for the home team over Herekino on the first innings. The local captain won the toss and batted first, but the conditions under which the innings was played were most unpleasant, showers every ten minutes driving the players to shelter. Broken Hand Patrick Edward Comiskey, young Irish heavyweight, has a broken left hand and will be on the shelf at least three months. X-rays showed Pat had suffered a severely fractured left hand on the cranium of the veteran Steve Dudas in their Madison Garden bout the other night. Mike Jacobs wanted to use Pat against Buddy Baer—there’s a topnotcher for you—and was even predicting a suggestion to pair him with Billy Conn, but Dudas’s upset victory and skull moved Pat out of the picture until April 1 at least. ☆ Pre-Olympic Track Efforts Wasted This was a typical pre-Olympic year in American track and field competition—one in which new stars came out of nowhere in the hope of landing on the international squad which was to go to Finland this year. But along with these stars came war and the Olympics are doomed—wiped out again by European gunfire as they were in 1916. So in 1940 the Olympic ideal—rej vived in Athens in 1896 to foster good will among the youth of the world—seems to be in the discard indefinitely (says an American writer). ☆ Perky Record-Breaker Eric Rowan, who broke the late Dudley Nourse’s South African batting record by scoring 306 not out against Natal recently, has a reputation as the most perkily confident cricketer in the country. Rowan is the exasperation of bowlers and between balls frequently engages the wicket-keeper or close-in fielder in conversation. When he was dropped in the Tests against the Australians a few seasons ago, Vic Richardson, the Aussie captain, said that this was a big mistake, as Rowan’s confidence would have been a valuable asset to the Springbok team. ☆ Nurmi’s Record Smashed Miklos Szabo, Hungarian middledistance runner, bettered Paavo Nurmi’s unofficial indoor record for 3000 metres when he ran the distance in Bmin 24.45ec in Berlin last month. Nurmi’s record, accepted offically only as an American indoor record, was Bmin 26.45ec, made at New York in 1925. (In actual fact so-called world indoor records are only American, since it is in this country alone that indoor running enjoys any wide popularity). ☆ Golfer v. Archer An archer against a golfer—this was the singular match played on the Royal Cape (South Africa) links the other day. G. W. Wollaston, who is a keen archer, challenged a one handicap golfer to a match. The golfer went round in the ordinary way, and Mr. Wollaston used his bow and arrow. For the long shots down the fairway a bow of 401 b. was used, but a lighter one for putting, the archer having to put his arrow into a six-inch square marked on a boot box to “sink his put.” The golfer was beaten by 3 and 2. The l.ongest bow shot down the fairway was one of 180 yards.
