The organiser of the Maori Nationalists at Hikurangi must be gratified at the result of the poll at that booth. There was a block vote for Tau Henare there —a block vote of one. But Kaipara Flats voted solid for Paikea (4 votes) as did Kerikeri (14), Oruawharo with 40, Mahurangi Heads with 2, Parengaroa with 10, Portland with 39, Reweti with 27, Takou with 17, Te Hapua with 75, Te Paki with 9, and Waiharara with 22. ☆ ☆ * This election was the first occasion on which pakeha style ballot papers were used for the Maori elections and it was thought that there would be a large number of informal votes. But this was not the case. The number of informal votes was small and at Kaikohe, the largest booth in the electorate, thei'e was not a single informal vote. ☆ ☆ ☆ On Friday an old Native was asked by a pakeha how he thought the Maori elections would go. He replied, “We all vote Poppa Savage.” ☆ ☆ ☆ The licensing poll in the Bay is interesting, and a study of the individual returns gives one an idea of the sobriety of the locality. Kaikohe likes its spot much more than Kaitaia, evidently. At Te Koroa every voter is in favour of the status quo, but at Puketona there is a 2 to 1 majority for prohibition. The licensing totals show that 4723 voters want continuance, against 5975 in 1935, 1268 want State Control against 827 in 1935, and for prohibition the figures are 2388 against 2706. State Control is becoming a live issue.
