SHADES OF SEDDON
Sir.—As one who has seen something of the political development of New Zealand from the days of Ballance, Seddon and McKenzie, including that group of stalwarts who endeavoured to outline a policy that would give stronger measures of freedom to the people (also indirectly extending to other nationalities more of freedom, humane and orderly government), I was fortunate in hearing over the air Dr. McMillan on Friday evening speaking to apparently a very large audience at Oamaru. I . was struck with that clear decisive address, an appeal to the people of New Zealand—an impassioned speech lasting over two hours, packed with data and lucid interpretation of what the National Health Act would mean to the people of this land ; the scope, the option, the wide liberty, and also where the money comes from the progressive development of the Act. Sir, as I listened attentively to that speech I felt a twinge of pride that New Zealand could produce such a man. More and more, as New Zea- J landers move out across the globe,
they will feel like citizens of the old Roman Empire, with perhaps this difference, that in place of mere lust for power there will be a humane desire to extend peace and nourishment to “all people that on earth do dwell.” Could John Ballance, Seddon and Co. rise from their resting places they must surely breathe a prolonged Amen. Yours, etc., R. L. DAVIES.
