Annual Meeting of Mangonui Rugby Union

In his annual report, presented at the meeting of the Mangonui Rugby Union held in Foster’s rooms, Kaitaia, last Friday evening, Mr. J. T. Clark said : “The past season has been one for congratulation and also one for regret. The standard of play was better than it has been for some time past, and the teams competing must be congratulated on the good spirit in vhich the matches were played. An innovation was the appointment of a Judicial Committee, and it speaks wJ! when thi-s Committee was only called together on four occasions. On the other hand, the visit of the Springboks, instead of helping the local games, was the cause of very poor al tendances. This Union went to the trouble of installing a loud speaker on the occasion of the Jlokianga match.but even this did net help to swell the attendance. Our senior reps were beaten by Hokianga in the northern section for the Harding Shield but were successful against the Bay of Islands later. The junior reps were also defeated in their Brake Shield match. I have to congratulate Walter Cooper on being selected te play for North Auckland and on his fine game against the Springboks. Our finances are still a serious matter and for the past season all I can say is that we have been able to pay our way but have not been able to pay off any of our old accounts. I must thank all members connected

wih the Union for their loyal support during the season and hope that the coming one will be an excellent one both from a player’s and a public point of view.”
