VETERINARY SURGEON FOR THE NORTH

The Minister of Agriculture has advised the Noxth Auckland Associated Chambers of Commerce, in reply to a request that a veterinary surgeon be appointed for North Auckland : “That arrangements have been finalised for Mr. T ,H. Hankin, M.R.C.V.S., to be stationed at Whangarei, and he will take up his duties there at an early date. “It is hoped that this will go far to meet the needs of the Noi’th Auckland district, as it is not possible to do anything more at the present time, owing to the difficulty of obtaining suitable qualified men either for private practice or for Government positions.” Use of Rail Cars on Northern Lines In reply to repi’esentations, the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce has received the following letter from the Minister of Railways : “In connection with your suggestion that the North Auckland lines would be a suitable area in which to operate the rail cars, I desire to inform you that, as more of these units become available, the matter of placing them in suitable localities will be considered on the merits of each district concerned, and in this connection your representations will not be overlooked.^ Fears that another insect pest may have invaded the Dominion exist today in the mind of some New Zealand scientists. There is evidence in Otago of a condition in some of the wheat harvested last autumn which is analogous to that obtaining in the case of depredations by the wheat bug, an insect which has taken heavy toll of European wheatfields.
