Women's Institute

WAINUI-AHIPARA At the October meeting of the Wai-nui-Ahipara Institute, held at the residence of Mrs. Stuart Masters, there was a fair attendance of members, Mrs. Shirley Masters presiding. During the afternoon a presentation was made to little Barbara Berghan. A donation of 10s. was made to the Horticultural Society, and ill 6s. to the Crippled Children’s fund. The month’s competitions were ; A pillow slip made from Hour bag—Mrs A. Morice l, Mrs. J. Morrison 2; Best bloom—Mrs. J. Morrison and Mrs. Stuart Masters equal number of points 1, Mrs. Shirley Masters 2. Three social competitions were also held, Mrs. Morice being the winner of two, and Mrs. Maurice Masters of the other. The roll call was “ M.y favouiite author.” Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. J. N. Berghan and Mrs. L. Masters. ORURU-PE RIA’S BIRTHDAY DANCE The Oruru-Peria Women’s Institute celebrated its fifth birthday with a dance in the Peria Hall, when owing to other amusements, there was not as big a crowd as is usual at an Institute birthday dance, but the hall was nicely filled for dancing, and as the evening was cool a very enjoyable time was spent. The hall was beautifully decorated with greenery, flowers, and coloured streamers, and under the electric light presented a very festive appearance. Mr. Eric Taylor had charge of the floor, and Christensen’s orchestra supplied the music. A feature of the evening was the spot light waltz, ami under the variable lights the dancers presented a fantastic scene. A bountiful supper was served about midnight and after the birthday cake, made by Mesdames Walton and Forsyth, had been cut and handed round, dancing was resumed. Mr. and Mrs, lloy Maddox won the monte carlo. At the conclusion of the dance all present joined in wishing the Institute “ many happy returns.” KAIKOHE BRANCH The October meeting of the Kaikohe Women’s Institute took place in the Masonic hall on Friday, October 2nd, when there was a very good attendance, including several new members, who were welcomed by the president, Mrs. W. H. Moor.

The members were reminded of the bring and buy fair which the Institute is holding in November in aid of funds for the Crippled Children’s Society. The afternoon, which took the form of a New Zealand afternoon proved most interesting. The roll call, “Recipes Made from New Zealand Ingredients,” proved more difficult than was anticipated as salt, pepper and sugar seemed to have a way of popping up when least wanted. Baskets decorated with New Zealand native plants brought forth many good entries. The winning one, decorated by Mrs. W. Edwards with yellow kowhai, was particularly attractive, while Miss Carey’s basket of clematis and Mrs. Carey’s shrubs were also duly admired.

The social part of the afternoon was well catered for. Mrs. L. Hands very pleasingly rendered a solo accompanied by Mrs. E. D. Chisholm, while a geographical competition, representing towns in New Zealand, was won by Mrs. A. G. Wiley. A play, “A Little Bit of Life,” by a New Zealander was read, the following taking part: Mesdames Johnstone, Savage, Killen and Moor. Afternoon tea served by the hostesses, Mesdames Carey, Robinson, Greenbury and Miss Carey, closed a pleasant afternoon. Drama Circle The monthly meeting of the Drama Circle was held at Mrs. Savage’s residence where there were present Mesdames Savage, Shaw, Killen, Harold, Moor and Miss Routley. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames McGregor, Guy and Johnstone. Two one-act plays, “Spinsters of Lush” and “Wayside War” were read and discussed. Arts and Crafts Circle

The September meeting of the above circle met at Mrs. Joy s resi-

dence and among those present were Mesdames Joy, Blow, Broomfield, Vaile, Cate, Young and Moor. An interesting demonstration on making soft toys was given by Mrs. Young who made one animal in material to show members just how it was done. It was decided to have a competition among the members. The matter of making a banner for the Institute was discussed and it was agreed this work should proceed. A report of the work being done at the school was given and it was reported rapid progress was being made by some of the pupils in brass work. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. Glee Club

Members of the Glee Circle met at Mrs. Chisholm’s residence recently, when there were present Mesdames Chisholm, Carey, Shaw, Greenbury, Joy, Harris, Robinson and Miss Carey. Mrs. Moor’s proposal that the Glee Club take part in the part singing competition to be held at the Whangarei Council meeting in October, met with approval, provided transport could be arranged. The members carried out a good rehearsal one or two new numbers being practised.
