BOBBY CALF REGULATIONS BEING RIGIDLY ENFORCED
Transport of Immature Animals Carrier Fined as a Warning An action of interest to farmers and those associated with the bobby calf business and one of the first brought under the regulations made for ensuring the proper feeding and maturity of calves sold or offered for sale or slaughtered for human consumption was heard in the Pukekohe Court a few days ago. The defendant was charged with conveying six calves each of less live weight than 1001 b. and which appeared to be unfit by reason of weakness or immaturity to be driven or conveyed to a place at which they were intended to be slaughtered for human consumption. Defendant was fined £2 10/- and costs as a warning that the regulations were being enforced. The Regulations I 1 or the information of all interested, the regulations are as follows : These regulations shall apply to all calves sold or intended for sale for the purpose of being slaughtered for human consumption the live weight of which is less than 1001 b. No per-' son, whether as principal or agent, shall sell or offer for sale, any calf to which these regulations apply unless such calf has been properly and sufficiently nourished (fed)® daily from birth and has been so fed not earlier than four hours before the time of its actual removal from his premises in pursuance of a sale or a contract or intended contract of sale. For the purpose of this clause the act of any person in placing any calf to which these regulations apply at or adjacent to any entrance to his land or premises or other customary place (whether on his land or premises or not) at which calves are exposed for sale shall be deemed to be an offer to sell that calf. In any proceedings brought against any person for failing properly and sufficiently to feed an yealf to which these regulations apply, the burden of proof that such calf has been fed as required by these regulations shall lie on the defendant. No person, whether as principal or agent, shall purchase, drive or convey any calf to which these regulations apply which appears to be unfit by reason of weakness or immaturity to be driven or conveyed to the place at which it is intended to be slaughtered for human consumption. Proceedings for any offence against these regulations may be instituted by any constable or any inspector appointed under the Stock Act, 1908, or under the Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1908, or by any person acting on behalf of any society established for iho prevention of cruelty to animals. Every person who commits a breach of these regulations shall be liable to a fine of £5.
In view of this, farmers would be well advised to make a thorough examination of all calves before offering them for sale.
