FAMOUS AUTHOR INDICTS “ENEMIES OF THE PUBLIC WEAL” “Historians should not try to be prophets, but one thing is certain in a world in which very few things are certain America will never return to prohibition,” declared Dr. Hendrik Willem van Loon, the famous Dutch philosopher and author, who recently visited New Zealand. “The most scandalous episode in our history has come to an end. Prohibition had brought us crime and bootlegging and murder and wholesale disrespect of the law. Prohibition, which did not take any notice of human nature, but which said ‘Thou shalt not,’ regardless of everybody and everything, had given us a younger generation which was fast losing all respect for law (for the law was an indecent absurdity), and it was riding us to rack and ruin. All this, by the way, is being said by someone who himself is practically a ‘dry,’ who drinks an occasional glass of wine because he does not believe in negative virtues, like ‘I don’t drink’ or ‘I don’t smoke,’ but to whom prohibition did not mean the slightest bit of personal inconvenience. I can, therefore, rise in meeting and denounce the unfortunate fanatics who forced this foul law upon us this unreasonable and inhuman law as enemies of the public weal, and if these be strong words, then take them at their absolute value. I cannot make my utterance strong enough.” Similarly New Zealand cannot make its verdict for Continuance too strong. Every voter should do his and her bit towards recording an emphatic endorsement of Continuance. 6
