Northern Maori Election
Mrs. Gilberd’s Candidature
Mrs. Gilberd (Rehutai Maihi), who is contesting the Northern Maori seat at the forthcoming election, is at present on an election tour of the North. Mrs. Gilberd last week was in the Northern Hokianga district, and this week has been in the Mango-
nui county. At all centres Mrs. Gilberd has been accorded a very good reception, and at all her meetings there has been a large attendance. The policy put forward by Mrs. Gilberd follows that of the Labour party as it affects the Maori race, but the candidate states that her chief interest is for 'the welfare of the women, and children of her race, giving particular attention to the employment of girls and boys who have just left school or college. Mrs. Gilberd is well known throughout the North as Miss Nellie Nathan, she having been on the staffs of the Kawakawa “Luminary” and the “Northlander,” of which she was for some time editor, and also on the staff of the “Northland Age.” Lately Mrs. Gilberd has been conducting a paper, published in Whangarei, for the Maori race in their own tongue.
