FAILURE UPON FAILURE Rejected by Fourteen Countries In view of the forthcoming licensing poll in New Zealand, it is interesting to note that no country in the world has now a prohibition law. One by one, those countries which experimented with it have given it up Iceland, Norway, Turkey, Russia, all the Canadian Provinces, Esthonia, Finland, and finally America. Attempts have been made to foist “prohibition” upon Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. All have failed. After the overwhelming majority for Continuance in New Zealand at the last licensing poll, many people expressed the hope that we had heard the last of “prohibition,” especially in view of the fact that the convictions for drunkenness in New Zealand show such a phenomenal decrease during the last few years, and that New Zealanders, on the whole, are a most sober and law-abiding people. Although this country has on six consecutive occasions rejected prohibition, the issue is automatically again before electors. Every available vote is, therefore, needed for Continuance to make plain to the whole world that New Zealand has no use for a proposal which has proved such a failure and a farce wherever it has been tried. 4
